Description

The Van Echten Suite is a perfect base for exploring the surroundings of the Oldengaerde Estate. Stay here in a beautifully restored suite on the first floor of Oldengaerde Castle, among the ancient oaks and beeches. From the living room and bedroom of this suite, there are views of the estate and its surroundings, which have been designated as a protected village site. The suite is named after Reynolt van Echten, who built the castle in the first half of the 15th century.

On the estate, surrounding the castle, is a garden with a moat around it that is shared with other users of the castle. Besides all kinds of birds, there are also squirrels here. At the back of the castle, sheep graze in the garden. You are also present in the habitat of roe deer here. Take an early morning walk or conversely towards dusk; these are the times when there is the greatest chance of seeing them up close. There are many monumental trees on the estate, especially oaks and beeches. The woods at Oldengaerde are home to currant trees, which bloom profusely in spring. It is said that these currant trees were brought to Dwingeloo from Canada by Professor Munniks, who lived at Oldengaerde around 1800. Outside the moat are sandy paths, inviting for walks. For example, enjoy a walk to the forest that belongs to the estate. Through the forest, it is a short distance to the National Park Dwingelderveld, the largest heathland area in Western Europe.

The Van Echten suite is located at the front of the house. The suite consists of a bright and spacious living and dining room with an open kitchen and a bedroom with a shower and toilet. The living room is spacious and bright. From here, the large windows offer pleasant views over the estate garden. The interior is a mix of modern and historical furniture; in the living room, for example, there is a beautiful early 19th-century cupboard. A painting from around 1800 adorns one of the walls. For small children, a folding cot and high chair are available. The suite is heated by wall heating, fuelled by geothermal heat. And very unique: the Van Echten Suite is accessible via a monumental staircase that dates from the 18th century. The current bike shed is a box. Here, bikes are safe and dry. There is a monthly guided tour of Castle Oldengaerde, which you can join as a guest. Want to know when this tour is planned? Check the calendar.
