't Veld

The former forest guard home ’t Veld is situated near the Leersum field. This is a beautiful forest and heathland area, with open heathland, a drifting-sand area, lovely covered fens, a stately oak-linden lane and impressive old rhododendron bushes. Deer, foxes and the tree falcon live in the area.

Striking is the lint of oak trees, named “Schaapsdrift” that runs straight through the pine forest. Along these oak walls the sheep used to be driven to the sheepfold. There are various old burial hills near ‘t Veld, a whopping 13! Initially the deceased were buried in the burial hill. Later they were cremated and the urn was buried in the hill.

Around the 18^th century a part of this peat area was excavated to gain peat. This is how the Leersumse Plassen were created and many dragonflies and birds now live here, which you can observe from a bird watch post. Grebes and dodges can be seen regularly. Plus, you can hear the tree larks, see the black woodpeckers and in winter you can see the magpie.
