Kale Duinen

Just outside the Frisian Appelscha is a plot of bare drifting sand names De Kale Duinen. No sea to be seen but still dunes? The drifting sand Kale Duinen or (also called Aekingerzand) was caused by overgrazing of the poor soil where weather and wind always had free play, therefore the name.

De Kale Duinen is part of the National Park Drents-Friese Wold. More than 6000 hectares of forest, heathland, fens and peat areas in the south-east of Friesland, on the border with the neighbouring province of Drenthe. A beautiful area to walk, cycle or ride a horse. This nature resort is also very child-friendly with a playing forest, a real gnome path, an exciting discovery route through nature and an information visitors centre.

 Holiday home De Kale Duinen is a former, very characteristic, forest guard home. The home is in the middle of the family forest, within walking distance of the Outdoor centre of Staatsbosbeheer.
