Meerbekke

The picturesque Twente has got the nickname ‘The garden of the Netherlands’ and not without good reason. It is a lovely picturesque area with waterfalls, hills, heathland, meadows, historic craft farms, lakes and small forest streams. Here in the hamlet of Hezingen on estate Springendal lies a beautiful holiday home: the historic Saxon farm Meerbekke. “Waterser” is not possible as the name translated literally means ‘meerbeek’.

This estate belonged to the textile baron Jannink from Enschede who gave its property the appearance of an English estate. In this special area, that is closed off for motorised vehicles, you can hear the noise of owl species such as the forest owl, church owl, screech owl and the stone owl and in the morning you are woken by the knocking of the woodpeckers.

In the past one would look from this authentic farm across the vast meadows with hares, rabbits and deer and the opportunities for the hunt were estimated here. Ambient and authentic places like Ootmarsum, the oldest town of Twente, now an inspiring artist village, are nearby.

Holiday home Meerbekke is one of the most authentic homes. Many original elements have been kept such as the typical Twente outdoor wood work, the tiled fired place and the old wooden uprights. With a modern interior that matches the style of the home, this is an ambient holiday home with a comfortable living room, dining/kitchen (oven, microwave and dishwasher), a bathroom with bath tub and four double bedrooms. There is a part where children can play and the terrace and the large garden complement the hospitality.
