Description

‘Marten en Jikke’ is a former peat cutters home. A peat cutter was someone who excavated peat. 150 years ago, there was plenty of this work available in National Park the Weerribben! This way the small farmers earned extra money in winter in this marsh area.

 

To complete history: ‘averts’ are outstretched pet holes now partly overgrown to quaking bogs. Numerous special plant species grow here. The strips of land where the peat dried out were called ‘ribs’.

In this historic context, in the middle of National Park the Weerribben, stands the former peat cutters home ‘Marten en Jikke’. A home with a modern interior and combined living room and kitchen (oven, microwave and dishwasher), a separate toilet, a bedroom and a bathroom with bath tub. The terrace is on the water where you can also find a Canadian canoe.
