The province of Drenthe is a diverse area. For example, the Hondsrug. This is a 70-kilometres long sand ridge in Drenthe and Groningen that runs from Emmen to the city of Groningen. The river the Hunze runs on the east side of the sand ridge; Hondsrug is probably a degeneration of this name. It is a beautiful nature resort with lovely villages, full of ash trees, megaliths, forests, heathlands and small fens.
A breath-taking beautiful part of the Hondsrug with forest, heathland and fens is Boswachterij Gieten-Borger in Drenthe. The fens, a whopping 26, give this special area its own look. The largest fen the Lunsveen, is a popular breeding place for gout gulls.
In Boswachterij Gieten-Borger another 70 bird-species also breed there and there are adders and sand lizards. The sundew, a carnivorous plant, also grows near the small fens. Also equally unique is the tree crown path in Drouwen. This is an excited 23-metres high path that takes the visitors across and through the tops of the trees.
There are also other areas in Drenthe that are worth a visit. For example, Huis ter Hansouwe, in the Ondiep or De Bosuil in Gees.
